Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association is a not-for-profit organization established in 1987 and devoted to analytical formation and the discussion of contemporary issues in psychoanalysis and culture.[1][2] It operates independently, bringing together researchers, scholars, and psychoanalysts from Europe, Latin America, and the United States, as well as specialists from other fields, through colloquia and seminars.[3] The name "Après-Coup" directly translates Freud's Nachträglichkeit, a key psychoanalytic concept denoting deferred action or retroactivity, which has been elaborated in Lacanian and post-Lacanian theory.[4][5]

History

Après-Coup was founded in 1987 in New York as an independent psychoanalytic association.[6][7] It emerged without direct precursors from major Lacanian schools such as the École Freudienne de Paris or the World Association of Psychoanalysis, positioning itself as a space for international dialogue on psychoanalysis.[8] The organization is provisionally chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York.[9]

No major institutional crises or splits are documented in its history, which has focused on sustained programmatic activities, including annual colloquia and seminars.[10]

Institutional Structure

As an independent association rather than a formal Lacanian "School," Après-Coup does not employ the institutional structures typical of the World Association of Psychoanalysis, such as the Pass (la passe) or Cartels.[11] Its governance centers on a directorate supporting analytical formation through open seminars and discussions, without specified membership grades like AE (Analyst of the School) or AME (Analyst Member of the School).[12]

Training & Transmission

Après-Coup emphasizes analytical formation through colloquia, seminars, and publications addressing psychoanalysis in relation to culture.[13] It hosts discussions on Freudian and Lacanian concepts, including Nachträglichkeit (après-coup), without a formalized training model involving personal analysis, supervision, or control analyses as in IPA or WAP schools.[14] The association has published works such as Lacan and the English Language by Jean-Pierre Cléro, Marilyn: Portrait of a Shooting Star by Marie-Magdeleine Lessana, and The Three Times of the Law by Alain Didier-Weill.[15]
