Espace Analytique is a psychoanalytic association dedicated to training and Freudian research. Founded in 1995 by Maud Mannoni and a group of French psychoanalysts, it emphasizes permanent formation in the orientation from Freud to Lacan.[1][2] It operates through daily seminars, reading groups, supervisions, and clinical work, without affiliation to larger Lacanian schools such as the World Association of Psychoanalysis.

History

Espace Analytique emerged in 1995 amid the fragmented landscape of French psychoanalysis, following the dissolutions of prior Lacanian institutions like the École Freudienne de Paris in 1980.[3] It was founded by Maud Mannoni, alongside Octave Mannoni and other analysts influenced by Freud, Lacan, and Françoise Dolto, as a space for clinical practice and theoretical elaboration beyond institutional impasses.[4][5]

The association addressed the need for an "operational base" for psychoanalysts, echoing Lacan's concerns with school structures while prioritizing the analytic discourse over personal authority.[6] No major splits or crises are documented in its foundational phase; instead, it has expanded internationally, with sections in Ireland (founded 2019) and Belgium (Espace Analytique Belgique).[7][8]

Institutional Structure

Espace Analytique functions as an association rather than a formal "School" with Lacanian governance like a Directorate or Cartels. It lacks the institutional devices of the Pass (la passe) or Cartels, focusing instead on open formation without rigid hierarchies.[9]

Membership emphasizes ongoing engagement in seminars, reading groups, and clinical exchanges, without specified grades such as Analyst of the School (AS) or Analyst Member of the School (AME). The structure supports individual theoretical articulation tied to clinical experience, unified by a Freudo-Lacanian orientation.[10]

Training & Transmission

Training at Espace Analytique centers on permanent formation (formation permanente), a concept derived from Lacan's teachings, involving personal analysis, supervisions, clinical internships, reading groups, and seminars.[11][12] Daily seminars and study days facilitate work on Freudian texts and Lacanian elaborations, such as the variable-length session and the analytic act.[13]

Members contribute to publications, including internal Courrier and external works on drive theory, clinical cases, and French psychoanalytic responses to contemporary issues.[14][15]
